Ah, cats; the feline furry friend that we all love. Cats are one of the easiest to care for creatures. As an owner of four fur babies, I can vouch that they are adorable pets.
Recently, I have been on the lookout to adopt a particular type of cat, a cream tabby cat that I saw on Pinterest and instantly fell in love with it. So, as I always do, I began to research it!
I love to get more facts about cats in general because I am the crazy cat lady that everyone talks about in the movies. There is so much that I didn’t know about cats, especially these cream-tabby cats, so I decided to dedicate an ode to these amazing creatures!
What are tabby cats?
Whenever you think of the term ‘Tabby Cat’, you think about the common street cat that you see on the side of the pavement, right? Well, let me tell you something, the tabby cat is not a breed! That’s right.
Tabby cats are a type of fur pattern that is seen on a multitude of cats. The tabby cat coat type is a sign of domesticated cats. What makes it a distinct feature is that there are special markings that represent the tabby cats’ fur.
They have the idiosyncratic ‘M’ shaped marking on the forehead, the stripes around their faces, spine, legs, and feet.
Tabby Coat Patterns:
There are a variety of patterns that a tabby cat has. The main four categories are:-
- Mackerel Tabby – sleek soft stripes all over the side of the body.
- Classic (Blotched/marbled) Tabby – Marble pattern stripes.
- Ticked (Salt and Pepper) Tabby – Break of hair stand color, making it look like it’s sprinkled on.
- Orange Tabby – It is originally called ‘red’ tabby. It has stripes of distinct orange and white.
How rare are Tabby cats?
Domesticated cats are one of the most common house pet there is. If we estimate the number of tabby cats in the world out of all cats, tabby cats are around 60% to 70% of all domestic cats in the world.
Come to think of it, there is a high chance that there is some sort of tabby cat genes in almost all of the cats in the world (except pure breeds).
There is an amazing phenomenon of cats and their color. It is estimated that the orange tabby cat has 80% males and 20% females. That makes breeding difficult. Matching the statistics of female orange tabbies being less, it makes sense that some colors are rarer to achieve.
The Cream Tabby Cat Saga:
Now that we have established that the tabby is a coat type, let’s talk about the cat that started my train of thought – The cream tabby cat. By the name of it, the cream is referring to the coat color of the tabby cat.
The true meaning of ‘Cream’:
Now here is the kicker, the cream tabby cat is one of the rare colors that are found in cats. That’s wild! This color is achieved by careful breeding processes and is usually found in pedigree cats.
How is this color made?
This color is made by the lightening of the orange fur coat (originally known as the red coat) that is the diluted form of this prime color fur.
This beautiful shade is also formed when the poor mama cat is sick or much stressed and gets a fever during pregnancy. The kitten born is usually sliver or cream in color and then gradually forms its ‘true’ color. It is called a ‘Fever Coat’.
What type of coat is this?
The best description for this is a solid color coat. But in the case of a tabby cat, it comes in the pattern of the orange tabby coat.
Tell me about those bean toes!
The nose leather and the pads of the paws (famously known as bean toes) are a beautiful shade of pink (due to the dilution of coat color).
Can I get a cream Tabby cat easily?
According to many types of research, it is not possible to find a cream tabby cat that easily. It is not a very difficult color to find in cats that are not domesticated nor have a pedigree genealogy. What I have gathered is that it might be difficult to get one from a shelter.
Is the cream coat the rarest?
We have established the point that the ream color tabby is one of the rare colors in the tabby cat, but it is not the rarest. Don’t give up hope, because it is easier to find a cream tabby than the other rare colors because they can be one coated or patterned.
Phew! That gives me some relief that there is still a chance for me to snag this kitty right now if I start to find the place.
What type of cream tabby cat the rarest?
The rarest patterned cream tabby cat is the ticked cream tabby cat. Since they are usually breaded through the orange tabby, it can be a bit difficult for the kitties to be born with a unique pattern like the ticked coat.
Where can I get my cream color munchkin?
If in the heart of your hearts you truly want a cream color tabby cat, you need to hustle for it. You can do the following:
- Go and look in the local shelter
- Ask the shelters to contact you If they find a cream color tabby
- If you are unlucky/impatient, you can look for a verified and reputable breeder and order one.
